Dr. Ronald Herberman, who runs a leading cancer institute at Pittsburgh University, made worldwide headlines recently for sending out a memo to his staff, warning that cell phones might cause brain tumors. "Recently I have become aware of the growing body of literature linking long-term cell phone use to possible adverse health effects including cancer," the memo from Dr. Ronald Herberman reads. "Although the evidence is still controversial, I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory to share some precautionary advice on cell phone use."
Dr. Herberman warns that children should only use cell phones in emergencies, because their still-developing organs are most likely to be sensitive to any possible effects of exposure. He also advises keeping mobile phone conversations as short as possible and using headsets, text messages or speaker phone settings to keep the phone away from the head.
